Roman Catholicism understands the Church as a visible, divinely established institution, governed through bishops in apostolic succession, with the Pope regarded as the successor of Peter and the visible head of the Church on earth. Eastern Orthodoxy also places great importance on apostolic succession and the historic episcopate, but rejects the authority of a single universal Pope, emphasising instead the collective authority of bishops, synods and councils.
