There is a body, however, that you should be interested in building up: the body of Christ, ''which is the church'' (Colossians 1:24). If you are a believer, you are part of this.
The Body
Why is it important to have the discipline of meeting regularly with other believers in your locality? Paul reminds the Corinthian Christians that a company of believers meeting in one place are, in character, “body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:27) and that ''the body is not one member but many'' (verse 14). We all know the problems and pains caused by a part of our body not functioning as well as it should. If Christians are not part of a local church, or are irregular in attendance, this will lessen the mutual benefit there could be, if only all were present and using the gifts and abilities God has given them.
The Building
The church is also likened to a building (e.g., 1 Corinthians 3:9: ''you are God's building''). God gives specific gifts for the ''edifying [building up] of the body of Christ'' (Ephesians 4:12). While you may not consider yourself one of those listed in verse 11, ''apostles . . . prophets . . . evangelists . . . pastors and teachers'', 1 Corinthians chapter 11 verse 11 tells us that every person in the body is given something by which they can benefit the whole. Chapter 3 verses 9 to 15 make it clear that all should be building and taking care as to the quality of what is built.
Hebrews chapter 10 gave us the clear command to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. The reason given there was in order that we might encourage “one another . . . as you see the Day approaching'' (v.25). Keeping in mind the return of the Lord, may we not neglect the important discipline of building up the body.
