As we have seen in earlier articles, becoming a Christian is a radical transformation. The good news is that God does not leave us to make our way through the Christian life alone. In fact, the Bible says that “when you believed you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit”. At the moment of salvation, God took up residence within me – the Holy Spirit came to dwell in me. I cannot see Him and may not always sense His presence, but He is there.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God, a distinct and equal Person of the Trinity, alongside God the Father and God the Son. He was present at creation, hovering over the waters.
Before the flood recorded in Genesis, He confronted humanity because of their sinfulness. Throughout the Old Testament, He also worked in the lives of God’s people, including figures like Joseph, Moses and Joshua.
When we come to the New Testament, the Holy Spirit’s ministry becomes even clearer. His work is centred on bringing glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Before Jesus went to the cross to suffer and die, He comforted His disciples with the promise that the Holy Spirit would come to them. He explained that the Holy Spirit is another Helper (or Comforter) who would guide them into all truth and teach them the things of God. His coming would convict the world of its guilt before God:
“And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:8).
His arrival would also coincide with the beginning of the church.
From that point onward, every believer in Christ would receive the Holy Spirit as God’s gracious helper for daily Christian living and as God’s guarantee of future blessings.
The Holy Spirit changes us
The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in our development towards spiritual maturity. Over time, He cultivates in our character what Scripture calls the “fruit of the Spirit”. These are attributes produced by the Holy Spirit as He works in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. They are perfectly displayed in the Lord Jesus and cannot be achieved by our own efforts. Rather, they are evidence of the Spirit’s work within us.
This means that the Christian life is not about trying harder to become a better person. Instead, it is about learning to submit to God, and allowing the Holy Spirit to shape our character so that we become more like Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit helps us to understand the Bible
Reading the Bible can be difficult, yet we can be encouraged that the Holy Spirit is actively involved in our learning. He helps us to grasp the meaning of the text of Scripture and apply it to our lives.
This does not mean every part of the Bible is easy to understand. But it does mean that we never approach the Bible alone. The Holy Spirit works through the Word of God to shape our thinking, challenge us, and direct our lives according to God’s will.
The Holy Spirit equips us to serve
Christians all have a part to play in God’s work. The Holy Spirit equips us with spiritual gifts – unique abilities He gives us to serve others by building up fellow believers in their faith and serving within our local churches. Examples of how this may take place are through teaching, witnessing, encouragement, leadership, or acts of compassion. These gifts enable us to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others and bring honour to the Lord Jesus.
The Holy Spirit comforts us
Life inevitably brings challenges and difficulties. In moments of grief, fear, or weakness, the Holy Spirit provides a sense of peace that transcends circumstances. The Lord Jesus called this “My peace”. One of the ways we as Christians often experience this peace is when the Holy Spirit brings parts of the Bible we have read into our thoughts at just the right moment. This awareness of God’s presence reassures us that we are not abandoned, even in our darkest moments.
The Holy Spirit helps us to pray
Prayer is one of the greatest privileges in the Christian life, but it can also be one of the greatest struggles. What an encouragement it is to know that the Holy Spirit helps us to pray, especially when we do not know what to say to God. In times of confusion or struggle, the Holy Spirit “intercedes” on our behalf, acting as a go-between, aligning our prayers with God’s will. This gives us confidence that, however feeble our prayers may be, they are important to God and receive the attention of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion
The Holy Spirit is essential to our lives as Christians. He lives in us, transforms our character, guides our decisions, equips us for service, comforts us in times of difficulty, and helps us in our prayer lives.
Above all, the Holy Spirit continually points us to the Lord Jesus Christ. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can enjoy a living and growing relationship with God Himself.
