Why Believe In God (1)? - The Complexity Of Our Bodies Demands A Creator

School, university and the media often make us feel that no sensible, intelligent person would believe in God. The challenge of scientific ideas such as the Big Bang and the theory of evolution raise significant questions that demand an answer.

Why Believe In God (1)? - The Complexity Of Our Bodies Demands A Creator

Yet there are clear answers. Biology, genetics, history, archaeology, and the personal experience of millions combine with evidence from the biblical records to make an unshakeable case for God’s existence.

Let’s consider one piece of evidence from human biology.

We have all cut ourselves accidentally but we think little of a small scrape. It may draw a few drops of blood but we know that the bleeding will soon stop and within a couple of weeks the scab will be gone. Yet the very processes going on in our blood after we cut ourselves are a powerful testimony to God’s existence.

Blood has been designed to clot when there is an injury to a blood vessel. Thankfully, it is also designed to stay unclotted the rest of the time. The process by which blood clots is called the coagulation cascade and, after it has been triggered by damage to the blood vessel wall, a series of reactions is set in motion, eventually leading to a thick, sticky clot of fibrin that fills the wound and stops us bleeding.

This is a very complex process involving thirteen different clotting factors (appropriately named Factors I to XIII). They are always present in an inactivated form, ready to be activated if we start to bleed. Each factor has a vital role to play in the coagulation cascade and without one of these factors a small cut can be serious. Haemophilia is a medical condition caused by a deficiency of a clotting factor. People affected by this find that even minor injuries can lead to serious internal bleeding, often causing permanent damage.

The complexity of the clotting cascade poses a problem for the theory of evolution. How could something so complex evolve gradually over time when each factor has a necessary role to play? If it evolved one factor at a time, we would all have bled to death long ago. The irreducible complexity of this amazing process demands that it all had to be there from the beginning. This points to a Creator, not some accidental evolutionary process. It backs up the message of the Bible, “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27).

Although we are God’s creatures we have all turned our backs on Him. The Bible teaches us that we will one day stand before our Maker and He will be our Judge. The Bible also teaches us that He loves us and gave His only Son to die for our sins. Jesus Christ rose from the dead, and He wants you to turn to Him in repentance and faith today. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
