According to the Westminster Shorter Catechism, “Man’s chief end [that is, his ultimate purpose] is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” Small wonder that many, having lost sight of this spiritual North Star, feel directionless on the seas of life. Man’s purpose on the planet is to glorify God and find pleasure in Him. Knowing this should thrill our hearts.
In Mark 12:30 the Lord Jesus gives this instruction: “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Our purpose is to glorify God, taking pleasure in our relationship with Him. The Bible says elsewhere, “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11).
Here, then, is the question. To what extent are you finding pleasure in a right relationship with God? Whether you are sceptical, indifferent or neglectful of God, the fact remains that to miss Him is to miss everything. He is the source and sustainer of all the purest joys to be experienced both now and in the hereafter. As theologian John Piper has put it, “God is most glorified in me when I am most satisfied in him.” Where are you seeking your satisfaction?
