When some information reaches us, we might believe it right away or we might wonder whether it is true. Occasionally we might not want to believe what we have heard – it is bad news, unwelcome news which sadly turns out to be true. At other times the news may seem too good to be true. Some things we hear nowadays might be fake news; that is, when facts are altered and manipulated, then transmitted in an attempt to deceive people or promote opinions which can be toxic.
But fake news is nothing new! Back in the first century, when the tomb of the Lord Jesus Christ was found to be empty, the Jewish leaders colluded with the Roman authorities to spread the unlikely story that His disciples had stolen His body and hidden it somewhere.
Actually, when His frightened disciples first got the news of Jesus’ empty tomb and the report that some women had seen Him alive, they would not believe it (Luke 24:9-11). But they soon found out that it was true. After three days in the tomb, Jesus Christ had risen from the dead. He had said to them a few times beforehand that He would do that, but at first they could not believe or take it in.
Christ’s resurrection demonstrates the reliability of His word. He is absolutely trustworthy. He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). What He said is totally believable. This is one of many reasons why we can believe the Bible.
