The Danger of Education

Life-long learning has many benefits. It keeps the mind active, allowing continual development of knowledge and expertise. Yet it is possible to spend the whole of life studying without ever coming to know God's truth.

The Danger of Education
"Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth."
2 Timothy 3 7 (NKJV)

Although we may become acquainted with different theories and philosophies, it is only what God says that can be completely trusted. The Lord Jesus said, ‘I am ... the truth ... no one comes to the Father but by me’ (John 14:6). Every word He spoke was truth, and in this verse He states very clearly that to neglect His message is to miss Heaven and be lost forever.

The danger in secular education is that we can become so busy studying our chosen area of interest that we have no time to investigate what really matters in life – the reality of eternity.

The Lord Jesus was clear about these important issues. He said, ‘Truly, truly... everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin’ (John 8:34). He was pointing out that we are helpless to free ourselves from the grip of sin. The Bible describes sin as anything that is contrary to God, whether in thought, word or deed. We are all sin’s slaves.

The Lord Jesus also spoke the truth about how to get to heaven. He said, ‘Truly, truly... unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God’ (John 3:3). We all need new spiritual life from God if we are going to live in His presence. Without it we shall never see God's kingdom. Unforgiven sin means we shall be lost forever.

The Lord Jesus also taught how to obtain new life. One of the first messages He preached was this: ‘Repent and believe the gospel’ (Mark 1:15). This is how to be forgiven and born again. We must change our attitude about our sins, and place our trust in the Lord Jesus. He is the only one who can save us for, though sinless Himself, He died on the cross for sinners like us and rose the third day as He said He would.

May I ask whether you have ever come to know the truth? Perhaps you have been too busy studying to consider the seriousness of your sin or the salvation Christ offers. Do not be like those in Timothy's day who were always learning, yet never came to know God's truth. It would be a sad waste of education if you missed the One it’s all about.
